MSAD 58 Procedure for 5th Graders in Sporting Activities
It is the belief of MSAD 58, that middle school sports is primarily for 6th-8th grades but sometimes numbers dictate inviting 5th graders to round out a team.
Sign-up Procedures: Prior to the 1st week of practice only 6th-8th grades may sign up to play. Fifth graders should sign up on a separate sheet.
Before 5th graders are invited to round out rosters, every 6th-8th grade student will be asked to play the sport first. It is important to encourage all students to participate. The 5th grade may only be invited to try out if there are not enough players. There should be no expectation that 5th graders will play on the middle school athletic teams. Fifth graders will be invited to try out for the team, if the maximum number of players per sport is not reached and only enough 5th graders will be taken to fill the team’s maximum roster. Fifth graders may be cut, so that teams do not exceed the maximum roster per sport.
- No 5th graders should be invited if your maximum number is filled with 6-8 graders.
- Prior to tryouts it is important to make sure that all players and parents know that there will be cuts if the number of 5th graders exceed the team’s maximum roster.
- There is no expectation of playing time for any grade level.
Soccer: Team Max is 22 with 5th graders - fifth graders will need to try out to fill any remaining spots
Basketball: Team Max is 15 with 5th graders - fifth graders will need to try out to fill any remaining spots
Baseball/Softball: Team Max is 15 with 5th graders - fifth graders will need to try out to fill any remaining spots
Tryouts should be held if numbers in 6th-8th grade exceed the maximum team number and cuts will be made.
